I’m pretty sure the moment you become a mom for the first time, all your preconceived notions of how you will be as a parent FLY OUT THE WINDOW. Oh, that’s just me? Okay.
I feel like I owe every parent I have ever met an apology. Even though I told you to your face that I wasn’t judging you, I was. I had no idea how much being a parent changes you. When it is your own child, everything is different. I am an Emergency Room nurse and have given countless adults and children shots, but when it came time for my son to have his first shot, my husband had to hold him and I closed my eyes. How is that possible? What has happened to me??
I have become a mom.
To the co-sleepers: I’m sorry. I now know how wonderful it is to snuggle at the end of the day when they are no longer crying or hungry.
To those that tried breastfeeding and it did/didn’t work: I’m sorry. I now know how difficult and painful a “latch” can be. I now know how hard it can be to increase your milk supply and that sometimes it just. doesn’t. work.
To those that drive around in the car with their children to put them to sleep: if you were watching me today around 4:30…
I have also found that since becoming a mom:
- it takes me roughly 3 or more attempts to finish a text message back to someone
- if I say I will do it tomorrow, it means never
- I wanted to post this on Mother’s Day (hahahahah)
- I do cry over spilled milk (and other seemingly harmless things)
All this to say, I am incredibly thankful for those who have gone before me and those all around me constantly guiding and encouraging me. Parenthood is not for the weak. It is teaching me more about grace every day; grace for myself and for others.
