Rushing the Seasons
Every Summer, I dive in. I am someone that LOVES the dry summer heat of Palm Springs. I love going to Bass Lake every year with my family. I love the beach, the pool, campfires and the long days spent with friends. I love feeling tired at the end of the day from playing in the sun.
And each year, just around Labor Day, I start to get excited. Not just for the changing of one season into the next, but for the BEST SEASON OF ALL: FALL. As I write this, I am currently sitting at my kitchen table with chili cooking on the stove and rain coming down in sheets. I am wearing my Chargers jersey and contemplating the situation that is now at hand: can I be a Chargers AND Eagles fan? Big decisions here people.
I am very guilty of rushing seasons, but I also like to think that if you truly love and enjoy each day of whatever season you are in, then when the new one is right around the bend, you are ready. I don’t feel like I wasted a single day of Summer this year and I am ready for my first Fall season on the East Coast.
That got me thinking about the different seasons of life that we go through. I now relate 100% to this statement relating to life with young children, “The days are long but the years are short.” I can’t believe that my son is already 18 months old, but truly, the days are long sometimes. I have to muster every ounce of energy I have and be ON (as in paying close attention to him) at all times, or my son may launch himself off the couch and free fall hoping that I will catch him in time before his little body smashes into the ground, hitting his head on the table on the way down.
We have like a 75% catch record, so…
But back to what I was saying. We each go through different seasons in our lives and some are happy and full of fun memories and others are harder. In the current stage of my life, I am completely worn out at the end of every day, but I know I will look back on this time and miss it. Just this week I have two older women approach me and tell me to “Enjoy this time” with Ford. I always think to myself, “Do I not look like I am enjoying myself?” But then I think back to other times in my life and realize, I wish I could go back and tell myself those exact words. Wherever you are at, I’d encourage you to be all there. Feel how you are feeling and do not take this season for granted. Time passes quickly, although sometimes it seems slow.
Also, know that you are not alone.
There are people that have gone before you and will be after you that will be going through similar seasons, and we are called to be there for one another; to rejoice and to cry, to clap and dance, and to sit quietly and offer our time and prayers. I hope this post finds you well and that there will be moments this week where you are able to stop and truly enjoy this season for what it is and what it is teaching you.
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
